Horsebox sauna cost in the UK: a real breakdown

Both horsebox layouts we build, L-shape and parallel benches, are priced the same: from £33,000 ex VAT. That's the starting point for a commercial-grade build on a road-legal trailer (Ifor Williams 510 or similar), not a stripped-down base spec with everything else as an add-on. Cheap flat-pack pods start much lower (£3,000–£10,000) but are built for light personal use, not the daily firing a paying business puts a sauna through.

The £33k covers a complete, ready-to-trade sauna, not a shell:

• The trailer & conversion: a road-legal horsebox trailer, fully converted and insulated for commercial use.
• Thermo aspen timber lining throughout the interior.
• A Narvi heater, included as standard and sized for the space.
• LED mood lighting.
• Benches for 6–8 people, in either the L-shape or parallel layout.
• A 12-month warranty on the build, plus the heater manufacturer's own warranty and ongoing access to spare parts and maintenance support.

A handful of choices move the price up or down from the base spec, and we'll always quote them individually rather than bundle them in:

• Wood-fired vs electric heater: which suits your site and how you plan to run it.
• Heater upgrade: a larger or higher-spec unit for bigger groups or colder sites.
• Solar upgrade: for off-grid or low-power sites.
• External paint colour: your own branding or finish.

Every horsebox is built to order and delivered nationwide from our Suffolk workshop, typically 8–16 weeks from order to delivery, with the build itself taking around 22–23 days days on the bench. Because it's on a road-legal trailer, delivery is straightforward: it tows to site rather than needing a lorry or crane, which also keeps day-one setup simple wherever you're putting it.

Budget roughly £250–£500 a month for fuel (wood or electric), maintenance, insurance and any pitch or site fees, in line with what our operators report across builds. A horsebox specifically needs one thing a container doesn't: towing insurance, alongside the public liability and equipment cover any commercial sauna needs. Against the revenue a sauna earns (a rule of thumb is around £10,000 per seat per year), running costs are a small fraction of turnover.

You don't need the full £33k upfront. The usual pattern across our invoiced builds is around half deposit, which secures your workshop slot, with the balance due at handover, typically around three months later. If you'd rather spread the whole cost, our finance partner Johnson Reed can get a horsebox build to around £1,000 a month, so the sauna can start earning from the month it arrives rather than after a capital outlay. There's also our partnership route, where we share the build cost or deploy and run a unit on your site so your own outlay is minimal.

At the benchmark rule of thumb, around £10,000 per seat per year, a 6–8 people horsebox has real earning capacity from week one. Operators running weekend and event bookings routinely clear the build cost within their first year or two; the calculator below lets you set your own bookings and price per session to see the payback for your plan.

A horsebox and a 10ft container start at a similar price (£33k vs £30k ex VAT) and are the same sauna inside; the difference is what's around the hot room. A horsebox is genuinely mobile, towing behind a 4x4 to beaches, events and rotating pitches. A container is relocatable rather than towable, moving by lorry, and suits a fixed site with repeat local bookings.
